SHOOTING AND FISHING
Scotland is renowned
the world over for its fine shooting and fishing in breathtaking and
unspoilt scenery. Shooting and fishing can be arranged in a couple of
large estates within driving distance of Cairness which offer first-class
game.
Shooting in this part of Aberdeenshire is mainly pink-footed geese,
duck, pheasant, partridge, rabbit and roe deer, and the shoots offer
both formal and rough shooting with driven days of up to 8-10 guns.
Lunches are normally on the estates during a day’s shoot, and we can
provide a splendid formal dinner party at Cairness on your return in
the evening. We can also provide informal dinners and lunches as part
of your stay here in the beautiful Georgian kitchen. Parties are ideally
designed for between 6-12 people, but we are also happy to arrange stays
for fewer guests, or individuals staying on a bed and breakfast basis.
Rough shooting can usually be arranged, and sometimes, at short notice,
but for formal driven shoots it is necessary to book well in advance.
Accommodation at Cairness is provided by us, and as your hosts, we are
at hand during the whole of your stay making sure that everything runs
as smoothly as possible and that you enjoy a taste of the finest Scottish
hospitality in one of the finest country houses in Scotland.
Social and cultural activities can also be organised through the day
for those within the party who do not wish to join the shoot. These
range from visits to historic houses, castles and gardens, tastings
at whisky distilleries, boat expeditions, golf days, and of course shopping
trips.
For game birds and roe deer there are individual shooting seasons that
you need to be aware of.
- Pheasants: The pheasant shooting season lasts from October 1st to February 1st in Scotland.
Partridge: The partridge shooting season lasts from September 1st to February 1st in Scotland.
Ducks and geese: Inland, the shooting season lasts from September 1st to January 31st in Scotland.
The stalking season for roe deer in Scotland runs 1st April–20th October for the roe deer bucks; and 21st October–31st March for the roe deer doe.
Hare: January 1st to December 31st.
The salmon fishing season in Scotland is from mid January-early February until late October, although there are some regional variations.
The Brown Trout Season is from the 15th of March until the 6th of October.
There is no closed season for rainbow trout as they are not an indigenous species to the UK and they can be fished for all year round.
A number of commercial fisheries are now staying open over the winter months and rainbow trout fishing can be found throughout the year, weather permitting.
Coarse fishing and sea fishing is also permitted all year round.
